The morning is a beautiful time. The sun is coming up. The coffee is hot and fresh. Everyone is still sleeping and the house is quiet. The calm before the storm. A million chores run through my head but all I want to do is sit and be in the moment. Sip hot coffee and breathe.
I need a haircut – no! Breathe.
I need to go to Home Depot – no! Enjoy the moment.
I need to do some baking – no! Relax.
I need to get meat out of the freezer – stop it! Give thanks for the quiet house.
Why is it so hard to be at peace for just an hour? The mind races but all you want to do is calm it. So, I will share with you a breathing exercise that I learned during a Tai Chi class.
Set the timer for 5 minutes, closed eyes, focus on smooth breathing in and out. In through the nose and out through the nose. Slow deep breathing. Let your mind follow the breath into the body and out of the body.

Believe it or not breathing is essential to wellness. I know what you’re thinking, “What do you mean breathe? Of course I’m breathing!” Yes, I understand, but pay attention to your breathing throughout the day. Are you periodically holding your breath? Is breathing rapid, shallow, or hindered? Focus your breathing on smoothness, unhindered.
According to Dr. John Travis, “When the air is clear, your lungs strong your body relaxed, and your mind at peace, you experience total wellbeing.”
